Description

This homemade whole wheat bread recipe produces a soft, fluffy, and wholesome loaf with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons honey (or maple syrup)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or melted butter)
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, add the warm water and honey. Stir until dissolved. Sprinkle the yeast over the mixture and let it sit for 5 minutes, or until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Stir olive oil into the yeast mixture until well combined.
  3. In another mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour and kosher salt thoroughly.
  4. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet yeast mixture, stirring with a wooden spoon or dough whisk until a cohesive dough forms.
  5. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until the dough becomes elastic and smooth.
  6. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1 ½ hours, or until doubled in size.
  7. Once risen, gently punch the dough down to release air, then transfer back to a floured surface to shape into a loaf.
  8. Place the shaped loaf into a greased loaf pan, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes until it rises above the edges of the pan.
  9. Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) and allow it to preheat fully before baking.
  10. Bake the loaf for 35-40 minutes until golden brown on top and hollow-sounding when tapped at the bottom.
  11. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
