Description

Warm Sausage Apple Sage Bread Pudding is a comforting dish combining savory sausage, sweet apples, and aromatic sage.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound of Italian sausage (mild or spicy, depending on preference)
  • 4 cups of day-old bread (cubed, such as French or Italian)
  • 2 medium apples (peeled, cored, and diced)
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 cup of heavy cream
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon fresh sage (chopped, or 1 teaspoon dried sage)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: caramel sauce or vanilla ice cream for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the Italian sausage over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Break it into small pieces as it cooks. Once done, remove from heat and set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed bread and cooked sausage. Toss them together to mix well.
  4. Fold in the diced apples into the bread and sausage mixture.
  5. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, chopped sage, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until well combined.
  6. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, sausage, and apple mixture. Gently stir until all the bread is soaked.
  7. Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 10-15 minutes before serving.
