Description
Warm Sausage Apple Sage Bread Pudding is a comforting dish combining savory sausage, sweet apples, and aromatic sage.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound of Italian sausage (mild or spicy, depending on preference)
- 4 cups of day-old bread (cubed, such as French or Italian)
- 2 medium apples (peeled, cored, and diced)
- 1 cup of milk
- 1 cup of heavy cream
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon fresh sage (chopped, or 1 teaspoon dried sage)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Optional: caramel sauce or vanilla ice cream for serving
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, cook the Italian sausage over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Break it into small pieces as it cooks. Once done, remove from heat and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed bread and cooked sausage. Toss them together to mix well.
- Fold in the diced apples into the bread and sausage mixture.
- In another bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, chopped sage, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until well combined.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread, sausage, and apple mixture. Gently stir until all the bread is soaked.
- Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 10-15 minutes before serving.
