Description
Savory Bread Pudding with Herbs & Cheese is an incredible dish that combines the flavors of cheese and fresh herbs in a creamy bread base.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 cups day-old bread, cubed
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup shredded cheese (such as cheddar, Gruyère, or a mix)
- 1 cup finely chopped fresh herbs (such as parsley, thyme, or basil)
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter (for sautéing)
Instructions
- Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- Sauté the onion and garlic: In a skillet, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until translucent, about 4-5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Prepare the bread: In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread and sautéed onion and garlic mixture. Toss to ensure the bread is evenly coated.
- Mix the wet ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using) until well combined.
- Combine the mixtures: Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes and gently fold in the shredded cheese and fresh herbs. Ensure all the bread pieces are soaked in the egg mixture.
- Transfer to baking dish: Spoon the mixture into the prepared baking dish, making sure to spread it evenly.
- Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
- Cool and serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool for about 10-15 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Consider incorporating cooked bacon, sausage, or diced ham for a heartier dish.
