Description

A moist and velvety cake with a stunning deep purple hue, perfect for celebrations. This recipe offers a visually striking dessert with a unique flavor profile and a tender crumb.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon purple food coloring (gel preferred)
  • Cream cheese frosting (for assembly)
  • Sprinkles or edible gold dust (optional, for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, vanilla extract, and purple food coloring until well combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Mix gently until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 20-25 minutes. Transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. Prepare your cream cheese frosting or your favorite frosting recipe while the cakes cool.
  9. Once cooled, place one cake layer on a serving platter. Spread a generous layer of frosting on top.
  10. Place the second layer on top of the first and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  11. Optionally, decorate with sprinkles or edible gold dust.

Notes

  • For a more vibrant purple, use a professional gel food coloring.
  • Ensure all wet ingredients like eggs and buttermilk are at room temperature for even blending.
  • Use a sharp, warm knife for clean slices.
  • Consider pairing with vanilla ice cream or fruit compote.
  • Store the cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days.
  • For long-term storage, wrap slices tightly and freeze for up to three months.
