Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ lbs (680 g) ground beef, 80/20
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for frying)
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 8 oz (225 g) mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups (480 ml) beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp dried thyme (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare patties: In a bowl, mix ground beef, diced onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Shape into 4 equal patties.
- Sear patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
- Cook onions & mushrooms: In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions and cook for 5 minutes until softened. Stir in mushrooms and cook until browned, about 5 minutes more.
- Make gravy: Sprinkle flour over the onions and mushrooms. Stir for 1–2 minutes until flour is absorbed. Slowly whisk in beef broth, scraping up browned bits from the pan. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Simmer for 3–4 minutes until thickened.
- Simmer with patties: Return hamburger steaks to the skillet. Spoon gravy over them. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, allowing flavors to meld.
- Serve: Plate with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, topped generously with onion mushroom gravy.
Notes
- Use 80/20 ground beef for tender, flavorful patties.
- Avoid overmixing the beef mixture for tender steaks.
- Sear patties first to lock in juices and flavor.
- Caramelize onions slowly for sweetness.
- Whisk broth gradually into the flour mixture to prevent lumps in the gravy.
- Taste and adjust seasoning before serving.
