Ingredients

  • 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk (or milk alternative)
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 oz (55 g) semi-sweet or dark chocolate, chopped
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tbsp molasses
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • â…› tsp ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of ground cloves (optional)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream or marshmallows (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk in a saucepan over medium heat, but do not let it boil.
  2. Whisk in cocoa powder, chopped chocolate, and brown sugar. Stir until fully melted and smooth.
  3. Add cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, molasses, and vanilla extract. Whisk for 1–2 minutes until aromatic and steaming.
  4. Sweeten or spice further if desired.
  5. Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream or marshmallows. Add chocolate shavings or cinnamon for garnish.
