Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) boneless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • Oil for frying
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 green onion, chopped (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the chicken pieces with salt and pepper. Set aside.
  2. In another bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Gradually add cold water until you achieve a smooth batter.
  3. In a deep pan or wok, heat the oil over medium heat. You’ll need enough oil to submerge the chicken pieces.
  4. Dip each piece of chicken into the batter, ensuring it’s well-coated.
  5. Carefully place the battered chicken pieces into the hot oil. Fry in batches until golden and crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  6. In a separate pan, add honey, minced garlic, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. Stir over low heat until the sauce thickens slightly.
  7. Add the fried chicken to the sauce, tossing to coat each piece thoroughly.
  8. Transfer the chicken to a serving plate. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if desired.
