- 8 cups of day-old bread, cubed (French or challah works best)
- 4 cups of peeled and diced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups of whole milk
- 1 cup of heavy cream
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 cup of raisins or chopped nuts (optional)
- Butter, for greasing the baking dish
- Whipped cream or vanilla sauce, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
- In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread and diced apples. If you’re using raisins or nuts, add them now.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread and apples, pressing down gently to ensure everything is soaked evenly. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes to absorb the liquid.
- Pour the soaked bread mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
- Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for 15-20 minutes before serving.
- Cut into squares and serve warm. Top with whipped cream or vanilla sauce if desired.
